Smith, Robinson, and Jones are a conductor, a porter, and an engineer on a certain train. Also aboard the train are three passengers with the same last names: Mr. Smith, Mr. Robinson, and Mr. Jones.
Mr. Robinson lives in
The porter lives exactly halfway between
Mr. Jones earns exactly $50,000 per year.
The porter’s nearest neighbor, who is one of the three passengers, earns exactly three times as much as the porter.
Smith usually beats the conductor at tennis.
The passenger whose last name is the same as the porter’s lives in
Who is the engineer?

well there are 3 places for the mr.'s to live, each of the people who work on the train live in the same town as one of the passengers in either chicago, detroit, or inbetween. smith and the conductor live in the same place which is in chicago because the porter lives in between and robinson lives in detroit. then it says the one who lives in chicago has the same last name as the porter. sonthe porters last name is smith. and since mr. robinson lives in detroit then the porters neighbor is mr. jones. so the engineer is either mr. robinson or mr. jones. WAIT!! but if it says that the porters neighbor owns excatly 3 times as much, you can't divide 50,000 into three exactly. so the answer is?
i realized i just cpmpletely contradicted myself about the porter.
so mr. jones lives in chicago and the porters last name is jones and he lives in inbetween just to clarify
You can make a MATRIX to find out the answer.
(Make the rows on the top be the last names and the ones on the side the jobs. When the puzzle proves that someone is not something, cross it off. EXAMPLE: If it says that the conductor and Mr. Smith did something, it is obvious that Mr. Smith is not the porter.)
ytou could from that problem into those charts that solve the thing with the x's and o's when you had to decide who name went with who in like fourth grade math i think they are called matrixes or something but to solve it in those kinds of charts
YES! The matrix is great idea for logic puzzles such as these.
So you can use x's and rule out what??????
A matrix graph would be a good wway to sort information. Or ( I wouldn;t suggest this) make a chat which (not matrix) you caould dross out information
yes i think that a matrix would be a lot easier to find out who is the engineer becasue you can rule out all the people who arent's and their jobs
Congratulations to those of you who commented; you are all on the right track!
answer: the porter is Jones so Smith is the engineer
